Through interactive and fun learning experiences, students attending a Construct Tomorrow event get a taste of the different occupational fields that are available via an apprenticeship pathway.
The carpenters stage speed-nailing contests. Roofers put heat guns in the hands of students and show them how to adhere rubber-roofing material. The iron workers strap students into a harness and let them practice walking on a steel beam (only a foot or so off the ground). Electricians work with students to wire an outlet. Bricklayers show students the intricacies of smoothing wet cement.
Many of the trades tap into student appetite for video games by displaying the interactive training simulators that are becoming more common in the industry. At the machine operators booth, students drive a loader and load dirt into the back of a truck. Painters use a virtual reality headset and hand-held wand to show students the skill needed to successfully use a paint sprayer.
